Organizing Your Child's Toys to Reduce Clutter
By Corina Volegna
Most kids have rooms which are cluttered and disorganized. Kids have to learn the values of neatness and organization, but these can be difficult values to teach. If your child’s idea of cleaning their room is scooting their stuffed animals, clothes, and games into a corner, then it is time to change their approach. But you can do it. There is no reason you have to just close the door to their bedroom when you have guests over. This article will provide you with some suggestions to reduce the mess. Step #1: Storage The key start to reducing clutter in a child’s room or playroom is to provide adequate storage. Storage can not only make things more organized, but can save space as well. It doesn’t matter how large or small the room is, storage items make all the difference. There is a great item that is perfect for storing things in your child’s room that you might not think of: fabric boxes. They are big enough and sturdy enough to hold toys or plush animals without being easily cracked or broken. Not only are they sturdy, but they also usually have blunt corners and are soft enough to be safe for children to play nearby. Fabric boxes are available in many sizes, so you are sure to find some that will fit in your child’s room. Many fabric boxes actually “nest” on top of each other, making them easy to store. Finally, they also come in almost any color, making it easy to match the décor of your child’s room. You can place them in a corner or even at the foot of the bed to use as a sort of toy chest. Make sure that your child understands the importance of organizing the contents of these boxes! Just throwing items in the box wastes space and gets messy fast, making it hard for your child to find things, as well. Maybe the boxes could be organized by the size of the different toy types. A small box could be used for miniature cars or small dolls. A larger box can hold larger toys, such as plush animals or board games. You might also consider color coding the boxes. A large purple box and a small orange box could help your child remember which toys belong in which box. If your child has a large toy or two which won’t fit in any of the boxes, such as a gigantic teddy bear or doll, it can be kept on the bed or in a corner. If the room is small and lacks floor space, try using hanging storage, such as some hanging wall baskets with lots of pockets. They are fun, colorful, and save space. If wall space is limited, try hanging them on the back of the door. If you have adequate storage equipment, then cleaning up will be a snap and should only take a few minutes a day. Step #2: A Practical Layout You want any room to be functional, but this especially important in your child’s room to keep down the clutter. Make sure to use the space and furnishings for specific purposes and your won’t be ashamed to show your child’s room to guests. There needs to be enough space in any kid’s room for adequate storage and storage boxes, so be sure to lay out the room accordingly. It helps if you choose furniture that can create space, especially if the room is small. Perhaps a higher bed, or a bed on risers or leg extensions, since this creates room for storage boxes underneath. This will give you space and allow some toys to be stored out of sight. If the boxes are categorized as mentioned earlier, then you and your child will always be able to find what they are looking for, even if it is out of sight. Even if you don’t want to use storage boxes and hanging storage for some reason, you can stay organized by designating a specific corner for stuffed animals. Start with the biggest animal, maybe a life-size plush dog, and place it in the stuffed animal corner. Then put the smaller toys, such as a teddy bear or plush cat, in front and around it. Other toys, like games, can be placed underneath the animals to keep everything organized and neat looking. This system isn’t as easy to clean up since you need to arrange several items each time that you clean, but is does serve as a form of decoration. Now when you or your child clean their room, you will have a place to put everything. This makes cleaning much easier and makes your home more beautiful. It can also help teach your child or children the importance of neatness and organization. It’s also a good idea to teach your kids to put away their toys every time they are finished playing, so that cleaning can be quick and easy without the clutter stacking up waist high! It also keeps your house ready for unexpected guests. It’s never too early for kids to learn responsibility.
